Tax Disc R.I.P.
The Chancellors Autumn Statement this week flagged the introduction of some changes from October 2014.
1. The ability to pay and renew VED monthly by Direct Debit. This will help owners to spread the cost of keeping the car taxed.
2. You will still be able to pay at the post office and on line, but you won't get a tax disk, just a receipt.
3. As a consequence there will be no need for a tax disk, because if you stop the DD then the tax disk is null and void.
I been thinking about this, the good news is that it means that plods, yellow perils and nosy neighbours will no longer know whether the car parked on the street is taxed or not. The plods will have to check the DVLA system.
The bad news is that the plods with have to check DVLA, and we all know how accurate a computer record can be.

Re: Tax Disc R.I.P.
What about tax exempt vehicles. Will you still have to go through the procedures just to get nothing? Presumably there
records will just say "old shitter" don't worry about it

Re: Tax Disc R.I.P.
Yes it would be well worth keeping the receipt in the glovebox!
It means that I will only have the replica tax discs in the cars which will look good

Great idea and not before time too! I'm sure I read somewhere that the DVLA will be saving £7 million by introducing this method.
You will still have to tax it I would imagineRetroreject wrote:What about tax exempt vehicles. Will you still have to go through the procedures just to get nothing? Presumably there

I understand that an Historic Vehicle is still eligible for tax - it's just zero rated. You can still SORN an Historic Vehicle. So yes you'll still have to go through the motions online or at the Post Office.

Re: Tax Disc R.I.P.
If you pay by direct debit there will be a 5% surcharge currently its a 10% surcharge for paying for 6 months and if you think about most companies like the utilities you get a discount for paying via direct debit

Re: Tax Disc R.I.P.
The difference is that you pay your utilities once you've already used the product (gas, electric etc.) paying by DD means that they get your money early and hence the discount.
With VED you currently pay in advance (6 or 12 months) giving the Gov the use of your money, so if you go to DD they lose the up front payment so you pay more to compensate them.
I didn't say it was fair but the maths works out.

Re: Tax Disc R.I.P.
That is a valid point hopefully you will be able to pay and go for those of us that have classics that pay road tax like my gold saloon costs me over £200 for a year's tax and I only do about 1000 miles and our family vw costs about £160 and we do 10 000 miles which is unfair at the mo so hopefully will work out a bit fairer. Tax exemption for the gold saloon would be better

The surcharge would also cover the extra admin costs of processing 12 monthly payments, versus a single annual one (ditto for car insurance). The opposite applies for the utility discount - lower admin costs for DD versus "on account".MarinaCoupe wrote:The difference is that you pay your utilities once you've already used the product (gas, electric etc.) paying by DD means that they get your money early and hence the discount.

Re: Tax Disc R.I.P.
Just been reading the latest FBHVC quarterly magazine.
Good news, if you are on SORN and it expires after 16/12/2013, then there is no need to renew as it will be automatic.
Just a note, if you move house you still have to tell them your new address.
You'll have read in the papers that there's no need to have an insurance certificate to hand when taxing your car as the system will check that you are insured - it's true.
However the downside is that if you are taxed and your insurance runs out, they will know that too. And you'll get a letter from the DVLA, if you can't prove it's insured then wait to be prosecuted.

I'm waiting to get my own Coupe sorted as well. Still nothing from the DVLA on a start date, the latest suggestion is that it will be reintroduced in the March budget for the follow up legislation, but if it doesn't get empowering legislation then it's off the books for now.
Personally I think it will come through, the magazine Classics Monthly have a splash about it in their latest copy.
