1.7 Gearbox replacement advice

Hi, I am planning to change the gearbox on my marina pretty soon as the one on it is slowly getting crunches between gears and struggling to find its way into first and reverse too. It isn't too bad at the moment but I was thinking of just changing it to something a little stronger. Would I be best to just find another 1700 box that is in good condition and fit that? I was also thinking of getting this one reconditioned but I am unsure on how expensive it would be to have it done or if it will be worth doing. The third option I was thinking was to fit a completely different type of gear box. Are there any boxes about that will fit onto a marina without much modification and also be able to run as they should?
If anyone can help with any ideas or give some advice then that'd be great.
Regards

All 1.8 and 1.7 Marinas used the same gearbox, if you can find a good secondhand unit that would be simplest, or someone should be able to advise a good place to get it overhauled.
Chris does a conversion kit to fit the Ford 5-speed, follow the link on his "signature".

We had good results from Banbury Gearboxes:
LINK - Really good service and they had parts in stock.
Some of the lads on here have rebuilt them at home, so would be able to give you some support I would have thought.

A1 Gearboxes in St Neots, do a good job.
The crunching noises are the synchromesh breaking up gently

. Learn to "double declutch" to reduce the resistance.
The first and reverse will be the reverse idle gear and its selector arm going home.

I have heard tell that some of the current supply of synchro rings on eBay are not as tough as they should be. Triumph specialists should be able to help with OEM quality parts.

I have found in most of the gearboxes I have stripped that the synchro rings were in relatively good condition - but the springs inside the synchronizer assemblies for both 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th had failed.
Because the springs had failed the assemblies will slide straight over the synchro rings without applying any pressure - so they simply cannot do their intended job.
Symptoms are exactly the same as worn out synchro rings.
However - there are 6 springs in total, and their combined price is miniscule compared to any other gearbox internals.
Part numbers are - or used to be;
3 x 106388 (1st/2nd gears)
3 x 104445 (3rd/4th gears)

Hi, thanks for all of the help! I have also seen that a few cars have had overdrive gearboxes fitted to them. I was also thinking this as a possibility, probably one from a Dolly Sprint if it could be made to fit? The 5 speed mod does appeal to me too as I feel the engine is rather working hard in 4th, especially once I get up to 70 so that 5th gear would be much more beneficial, or overdrive as a possibility.

An overdrive conversion means that you will have to cut the transmission tunnel and weld in extra metal, to make it 2" taller, which then means that you lose the bottom heater vent.
The 5 speed conversion will fit inside the standard transmission tunnel.
