Don't like the idea of MOT exemption. The reason I think their contemplating this is because there is a lot of valuable registration plates out there which for the moment can only be transfered if the vehicle has a current MOT. DVLA gets a nice cut through retention fees so if you've had a car sitting in a field for forty years it's suddenly going to cost you to keep the plate... or DVLA can buy it from you for a fraction of it's value!

I also suspect they'll then use it to justify a blanket mileage limit for vehicles in the "historic" category, which would be something of an embuggerance for those of us not in the shiny Sunday car show lineup brigade who actually like to drive our cars (when they work/ aren't in pieces etc).

I think the current system (pre 1960 MOT/ rolling 40 year tax exemptions) is a fairly sensible compromise although truth be told I'm not particularly convinced that the pre '60 exemption is a good idea either.

oh, without a doubt. At the moment you only need to sorn your car when it's off the road but all this MOT exemption business makes me wonder when they'll start charging to keep it off the road! I did hear they're doing away with the annual sorn... I wonder why?!

Annual sorn has already gone, once you sorn it stays in place until you re tax or sell it.
