I am changing the steering rack and Mr, Haynes says to use 1/3 pint of the recommended oil and squirt it through the oil seal on the steering box. Two
questions, what oil to use as the Haynes manual omits to inform you and how do you squirt oil through an oil seal, I thought that was the idea. Can the oil be put in through the centre hole in the rack casing?

Typical Haynes - use axle or gearbox oil. Yes you should use the centre hole on the rack. Beware that if the rubber steering arm boots are not tight the oil will leak out.

Cheers Chris. Thought that might be the way. Could I ask one more question. Haynes state that the distance between the track rod end centres should measure 110.8 cm, mine measure 108 cm on the car. Are they wrong with that also/ Don't want to drive all the way to have the wheels aligned with the tyres scrubbing. I know the best thing to do is set them at what they are now, but it would just save re adjusting once on, before I take it to be tracked.

There are two types of racks, the Mk1 (slightly wider) and the later rack which sounds like the one that you have. Try and keep the current settings and then drive to get them tracked up asap. A few miles to a garage won't hurt the tyres greatly.

Tanks again, I will set the new one to the setting I have. The car was a 1978 so presumably a late model.
