I stripped and rebuilt a Mk1 steering rack with the new polyurethane bush last weekend whilst at the Restoration Show, it took about two and a half hours, start to finish. I had the use of a genuine BL workshop manual which describes the process in detail, there's nothing in the Haynes manual on this at all.

Not terribly difficult, you just have to be methodical.

A few tips;

1. Be careful when levering up the peened sections of the locking collar, as you are going to need it again and re-peen it in the same place.
2. You'll need two sets of mole-grips/stilsons etc. to unlock the locking section from the steering arm retainer.
3. To drift out the old bush, use an 11/16ths socket inside the rack casing.
4. Don't worry about the shimming instructions, just be careful to put back what you took out when you dismantled the rack.
5. The correct lubricant is SAE 90 Gear Oil, not grease, it goes in through the hole in the middle of the top of the rack casing.

I have scanned the BL Manual pages and provided links to them below, so you can have a go yourselves.

You can pour the oil in through the rack centring hole, but it is much easier to pour it in through the pinion end whilst you have the bellows off. Just make sure you have the bellows on the other end fitted first.

Hi to everyone,

Are these steering rack bushes still available or collecting orders in order to make another batch? I will be interested in acquiring one or two. Thanks a lot

Regards,

Chris
