"Green" A Series!!!!

Marina's are "green" because running one meets the "reuse" part of Greenpeace's "reduce, reuse, recyle" mantra. And it gives you bragging rights over recyclers, since reusing beats recycling (uses less energy etc).

Bryan, you have hit the nail on the head here. For the last god knows how many years our government (the superior Daleks) have been telling/ preaching to the nation about recycling. They have spent millions of pounds on advertising the positives about recycling etc. So what do they do next? encourage you to SCRAP your car!

I have always been a firm believer of recycling and having things last for as long as possible and this includes my cars. I look after my property for this very reason. My current everyday car is a 1995 Peugeot turbo diesel and it's absolutely tip top in every possible way. I intend on keeping this vehicle for as long as possible. When I ever need bits for my cars my first stop is usually the breakers yard before a motor factors. I am not doing this to be a cheap skate but because it's my way of reusing and recycling.

Lets not waste the Marina by making it greener and just enjoy it for what it is. Remember the Marina was developed in the late 1960's and not in the 21st century. The more gadgets and gizmo's you add to the car the harder they usually are to repair when things go wrong especially at the side of the road 100 miles from your house.

It must be a long holiday they are on Paul! anyway yes it is easy to criticise and anyone can do it but come on, environmentally friendly Green Marinas? As I have said before if you want a "Green" car then you don't want a Marina or any other classic car for that matter and your old bangers are worth a minimum of £2000 at your local dealers.

A ´Green´ car in my book is one which uses the minimum of our planets resources to build, use & re-cycle. A 25 year old Marina covering 5,000 miles yearly will use much less than 25% of the energy than a Ford Sierra and its replacement Ford Mondeo both scrapped after 12.5 years and 80,000miles each.Every Marina still roadworthy is making one newer car available to somebody else at no extra cost to the planet

As soon as you drive a new car out of the showroom its worth at least £2000 less. Its an environmental tragedy that hundreds of thousands of roadworthy cars are being crushed, and the taxpayers pockets are being looted to fund this ill advised scheme created by the motor industry lobby to delay the inevitable downsizing of the motor industry with a worldwide capacity of 86 million vehicles and a demand for 55 million annually last year.
If anyone wants to be green ,then they should get at least 200,000 miles out of a properly maintained car before its worn out & ready to be scrapped.
Classics cars are a very lifetime energy efficient way to handle low mileage transport needs, under 10,000 miles yearly.However for high mileage drivers the most fuel efficient cars available make sense provide these vehicles are cascaded to less wealthy low mileage users

I think the car causing global warming is rubbish just an excuss to tax more
Thats why I went for the TC and run a 2.5L everyday :P
Just hate having to pay the bleeding bills though

I am sure poeple on here will post items when they have things to say.
I am not personally in to modifing marina's or making them green (apart from the paint colour!) Just making sure they run well is good enough for me

Excellent points raised by XER905L, Paul, Bryan etc.

Like XER says to get the best out of a car on an efficient scale is to maintain it and run it for as long as possible. One of my Peugeots (2001 406 Hdi) has 178,000 under its belt and it still has at least 200,000 miles left in in it providing its maintained.

My older Pug 306 1.9Td is capable of running on veg oil if need be and also most modern diesels can run on Bio. I am not looking to criticise people but lets not get carried away with "Green issues" on a petrol forum. People must look at this forum and really wonder what the hell we are all about.

The best thing anyone can do to be economical with anything in life is make things last. Our Marinas will still be out and about in 10-15 years time long after the current brand news cars rolling off the production line have been weighed in for scrap. My neighbour has a new car and he has nothing but problems with it. When there is a problem the ecu just shuts the car down and it's rendered useless and the only way to fix it is through a main dealer so he can wire the car up to a computer. I have gave him countless lifts to the dealers in the Marina and it has never once broke down!

I also agree with everything said about a standard Marina or Ital's 'green credentials' but I always have and will modify my cars to better suit my uses be it for economy or performance. I don't have any hang-ups about people keeping their cars standard if they want either, each to their own.

I will confess that "green" factors were prominent in our thinking when we replaced the family wagon last year. Our previous car was a Mazda6 wagon, which slurped 95 octane at an alarming 10litres/100km (about 27 mpg), but we no longer needed the load space now that our son was at school. Did our homework, and chose the car that sipped the least fuel that could still handle the luggage for a week's holiday. At 6.5l/100km (about 43mpg) sipping 91 octane, a good 33% easier on the wallet.

Sadly, the way diesel cars are taxed in NZ, makes it hard to cost justify, although they are becoming more widely available.

In the meantime, I will drive my Corolla until it fails it's WOF(MOT) because of rust, then I'll replace it with a nice Marina. Working on SWMBO that a road-going Coupe for weekend racing is a good idea. 8)

Thanks to all it who offered advice and info, even if it did get a little heated!!!!!

To set the record stright, i was asking the question from the MPG angle not the "Greenpeace" one!
I would love to use my recent addition as a daily driver if i restore it but need a better MPG!!!

However, with times changing i think its important to look at how we "COULD" modernise are cars.
With the scrappage scheme breathing down our necks, It's not easy convincing people that our cars are worth saving!
If we can show that are cars "COULD" adapt then maybe attitudes would change? I always belive it's better to reuse or recycle (eg cars, parts) rather than just throw away!

My current daily, a Pug 406 saloon has over 122k under it's belt and i intend to get it to do that again!

The best answer to the knockers, is that your Marina is a classic car that doesn't cover high miles, so contributes little to greenhouse gases. Something that's worth preserving as a reminder of how things used to be - just like steam engines and cathedrals.

Dan, I will let you off because you are a fellow 406'er! My 406 has covered 178,000 miles and I fully expect it to do this again + more. The best way to keep your Marina in top fettle is to service it regular. My 1.3 Marina returns over 30 MPG and never once had any emission issues with it. If your timing and carb is spot on then I can't see our piles of junk killing the planet.

To put things in perspective why should a country as TINY as the UK be overly bothered about saving the planet? There is much bigger countries in the world that you could fit Briton into a small piece of it and they don't bother their arse about saving the planet. Even if the UK was 20 times larger it still wouldn't have any impact what so ever on the planet so basically it's just a ploy from the government to raise taxes and revenue. After all the UK is a benefit ridden hell hole that needs gullible tax payers to prop the country up and keep all the tired lazy fookers who can't be arsed working and choose to claim benefit instead!
