Just didn't want you to think that after all the information shared on this thread, I'd be content to leave things as they were. In the short term, I still need a way of starting the car if it just goes 'click', but in the even shorter term, I didn't want it catching fire! I've also got a growing list of other jobs and things to look at. As I'm pretty sure we're all familiar with, it's case of prioritising! I may or may not have a fuel leak....but that deserves a new thread. And I think I should have done this thread on the Technical section of the forum, shouldn't I? I hadn't found it when I started, but I can see it now.

Unfortunately this week, and alternate weeks, a new work rota takes me from the East Midlands to Central London on a daily basis, driving a 55mph lorry and it takes me an hour and a half each way to cover 12 miles inside London! Which leave me with little time for anything else either side of my shift. So for now, just dropping in and then dropping out again before sharing my further Marina issues...

Understand Mick, we all have lives to fit in around hobbies, the 1.3 auto ive got hadn't run for 7 years i worked july to nov 2014 then left it till march 15 &finished it off ( running & MOT ed) may 15 & that was mainly recommissioning. & im retired (allegedly),....
I've got another one an Ital in bits which i haven't touched for years (thats why i go by
Slow Ital (very slow ) its been in the garage since sept 2011 so i can't boast about finishing jobs off... you'll get there & we need all the autos we can get... they're a bit thin on the ground...

My 2.0 ital auto had a starting problem turn the key and it would just click then sometimes start the solenoid on the starter was suggested and the starter was removed cleaned checked and the solenoid was working ok put this back and same thing kept happening turn the key and just get a click like flat battery,but battery ok.
The inhibitor switch on the side of the borg warner 65 gearbox was next to look at as the stater current passes thru this when in park or netraul.
i replaced this for a geniune burgess unit and hey presto the car has no starting issues anymore it must have been faulty inside not allowing enough current through for the stater but sometimes would be ok and start the car.

I don't have any experience on Marina autos and starting, but I had the same problem on my Stag, which turned out to be a plug/socket that joins the ignition switch to the starter solenoid. The internal loom dropped down into the transmission tunnel and about a foot from the starter motor it was joined to the starter loom by a poorly insulated plug/socket arrangement, just where all the road spray gets thrown up. The inside was quite corroded, so I cleaned up all the contacts, plugged it back together and liberally sprayed everything in sealant and it's been fine since.

Yes I remember the inhibitor switch being suggested to me at Quorn. Kilroy I think in NZ had told me about a wiring mod using a solenoid that by-passes what he has discovered is a drop in wiring efficiency that comes with age, but despite when first I posted on the subject this being a priority for me, the mess that is the carbs/timing/and now possibly the compressions, plus the temperature gauge needle bending nearly into the red (now fixed, my only successful progress) put getting the ignition switch sorted to the back of the queue. Then I severely lost interest. I've recently been pottering about at weekends when other commitments allow me, trying to tune it up again, but if I need to get the car somewhere else for more serious work, I'll have to look into sorting this switch problem so at least it can be potentially MoT'd and driven.
