when i set off in first gear i get a funny little whine then in 2nd there is non. also in reverse i get a small whine.

what could it be ?

Most probably the reverse idle gear, it's turning on its own (idling) whilst first is selected and then fully engaged in reverse.

Before thinking about rebuilding the gearbox, make sure that the gearbox has been properly filled to the correct level with the correct grade of oil. The gear runs on plain shaft (no bearings) so lubrication is important.

What grade oil and what kind should I buy so I know because the old type of oil from back in the day can't be bought I don't think

Classic Castrol oil can bought on line from there website.
EP80 or EP90

Mine does/did whine in all gears except top!

Whatever oil you put in there make sure it isn't gl5 spec.

And GL4 I think, they have additives which attack the bronze components.

Im' looking for a rebuild on my 1300 box in the westcountry (Exeter). Mine is noisy in first and groans on overrun in second. Any body help me out ? Cheers Chris ? :?

Mines just been started on by someone in Plymouth-a company Alan Jeffries (enginetuner.co.uk) uses. Might be worth a phone call?
