Can we try an MGB tank for size?

I think it would be interesting if the MGB tank could be made to fit a Marina. I know a company that could adapt a new one and make a filler tube then weld it all up. . Anyone know the dimensions?

Obviously, I'm thinking of adapting new tanks, not old ones.

Ben ,have you looked at a Rover P6B tank. They fit very nicely in the boot behind back seat.I am seriously looking at this so it frees up area for good mufflers on the V8.

I'm pretty sure that the basic MGB tank pressing is the same as Marina. If you look at any of the websites for MGB and the pictures of the bottom of an MGB fuel tank, it has the same ridges and pressings as the Marina.

The fuel inlet and the sender are in different positions.

I've not looked but I was thinking of an alternative tank for standard cars. They still make tanks for the MGB so we could always get new tanks adapted should we need too.

Yes Chris, I've got pictures but wanted dimensions. Holes can be welded up and holes can be made to fit a new filler neck.

I shall enquire to the MGB club and find a manufacture hopefully.

Just been out to the V8 with a tape measure - it's got the same tank as an 1800 MGB so the info is still relevant.

25" x 22 1/2" x aprox 6" deep.

You can add a couple of inches to the width and depth to account for the flanges where the tank bolts up to the bottom of the boot floor, though.

Thanks Jon. I shall measure when I'm back up the unit :-)

Had a quick measure up and the Marina tank is the same size :-)

I've emailed one of the manufactures but hold out little hope of them wanting to help. The cheapest I've found MGB tanks is £95. The cost of the new filler neck and fitting could easily be this again. I will continue to look into it. Watch this space.

Great work Ben, definitely an avenue worth exploring. I reckon there must be quite a few Marinas out there with dodgy tanks that could do with replacing.

Are the filler necks the same as well but just put in a different position or are they completely different? I have a guy near to me that may be interested in doing the mods but I will need all the info for him. Would he have to fabricate a new neck? If so, obviously, the cost would be different to just moving a neck to a different position and blanking a hole off. He normally does radiators of all sorts and from people all around the world but he does other stuff like this as well and is very reasonably priced.

Gary.

The MGB doesn't have a swan neck like the Marina so it would need a hole welding up and a neck fabricating.

I had the tank out of the V8 over winter...
This is what they look like.

Does that mean the MGB sender is the same?
Or is the exit pipe bent differently?
Looks a bit different.
May be they still can be used?

The MGB filler hole is on the top rather than the Marina on the right.
The MGB sender is on the right rather than the Marina sender on the front.

I didn't say It was going to be a straight fit :-) It will need modifying but at least they still make them and the mods can be made prior to any fuel being put in it !
