Just got home from knebworth and could smell an awful smell coming from car traced smell to under bonet
It was coming from battery which was hissing so I rapidly took it off the car and it was f***ing hot
Would this suggest my alternator had had it and is overcharging ?

I had the same some years ago, mine exploded covering me and the engine compartment in battery acid.

The control set on the alternator had broken down allowing the alternator to overcharge the battery. You can buy the electronic packs off Ebay for £10-£20.

Thanks chris
Was going to get me multi meter out once battery has cooled down and re toped the fluid up .
That deff a better price than a new alternator

If you have anyone near you that repairs alternators Lee then it sounds as if it only needs a regulator. Cheap fix and it'll get checked out thoroughly as well.

Gary.

I have an alternator that charges so hard you can hear the engine slow down when it does its thing.

I replaced the regulator in it and it made no difference.
I suspect that it is in fact the rectifier that is faulty - because that is where the regulator gets its voltage reference from.
As I have been able to buy both regulator and rectifier for NZ$10 each - I shall henceforth replace both.
You need a soldering iron to replace the rectifier.

Cheers.

Well all now sorted after getting my multimeter out found that the alternator was putting out 18.9 volts.
Took Gary's suggestion and found a place very local who specialises in starters, , alternators and batteries went and saw him and said not worth repairing as can get a whole recon unit for £38 on an exchange basis so I picked it up today
