Re: Rear Axle Keyway Konfusion

Hi Scott

That sounds like a bit of a lash up by Caterham. Something to be aware of although it may have been covered in Caterham documentation. When the Marina changed from the 3/16” keyway to 1/4” keyway in 1978, the also increased the diameter of the hub very slightly at the point where the outer ...

Re: Rear Axle Keyway Konfusion

Hi right-oh, there are no differences between the Ital 1.3/1.7/2.0 halfshafts and hubs, they are all 1/4" key-way. The standard differential pinion uses shims not collapsing pinion spacers. I think that its most likely that a previous owner broke a halfshaft and went down to the local scrap yard and ...

Re: Rear Axle Keyway Konfusion

I’ve never heard of genuine Ital half shaft/hubs with 3/16” keyway. Let me check the factory parts manual and get back to you.

Also if you are stripping the axle anyway, why not just check whether the diff has collapsing pinion spacers or not?

I think the thing is that whatever the axle had when ...

Re: oil filer to block

They are the same as the MGB. There are two types, the early one with an upright oil filter and the later one with a hanging filter. For a 1971 car it would be the upright filter. You should find a used one on eBay, or new from MGB Hive. https://mgbhive.co.uk/product/12h3273-mgb-oil-filter-housing/

Don"t forget the MG Midget, 1975-1979. Due to rationalization, it had the same basic engine, and same trans as the Spitfire(no OD option tho). Rationalization, is that a Brit euphamism?

Kinda - The pre-1975 Midget gearbox was a hangover from the days of the Austin A40 and the Morris Minor. The ...

Re: Help refitting gearbox to engine

If I remember correctly, the centre of the crankshaft hole is deeper than if you measure at the edge of the hole, the counter-bore is the correct dimension for the spigot bearing, the centre hole is deeper to accommodate the tip of the input shaft that pokes through the bearing.

Re: Another clutch question

There are several methods of clutch slave removal, but there are some common steps.

1. Disconnect the clutch feed pipe from the slave.
2. Knock the mushroom headed pushrod out from between the slave and the clutch release arm - I use a large screwdriver.
3. Remove the large rubber cover from the ...

Re: Rear shock absorbers

The crush tube in the middle of your shockers are quite thick, if you are careful you should be able to drill or ream out the holes to 1/2”.

Alternatively, if you can push out the existing crush tubes with some sockets in a vice, you could then push in some correct dimension tubes, either from your ...
