Help refitting gearbox to engine

Post by martinclan » Fri May 23, 2025 3:48 pm

I am struggling refitting the gearbox to the engine. Both are out of the car so should be easy in theory altough age is catching up with me and I am not as strong as I used to be!
1. I have checked I have the correct clutch plate by testing it of the gearbox spline.
2. I have centred clutchplate - albeit with a home made tool - but I think it is good.
3. I also checked the spigot bush was a good fit before fitting it the the crank.

Any tips please? Or would anyone like to come and help even.... :-D :rolls:

One slightly odd thing I noticed, although it won't stop the gearbox fitting, is that the roller bearing spigot bush doesn't fit quite flush with the end of the crank - it protrudes about 3mm. See picture. i have tapped it as hard as I dare and I am pretty sure it has gone in as far as the little locating shoulder in the crank.

From the photo spigot bearing looks too far out will the gearbox and bell housing bolt up to the engine without the flywheel and clutch fitted to see if spigot bearing is bottoming out on the 1st motion /primary shaft of the gearbox

Thanks for the reply. I did measure up and there seemed to be sufficient room. But its a good idea to try without the clutch as a first step.
Cheers, Robin

If I remember correctly, the centre of the crankshaft hole is deeper than if you measure at the edge of the hole, the counter-bore is the correct dimension for the spigot bearing, the centre hole is deeper to accommodate the tip of the input shaft that pokes through the bearing.

So - finally the engine and gearbox have been mated. No big drama in the end but an extra pair of hands helped along with a fancy clutch alignment tool that clamps the clutch plate centrally to the housing before assembly. and it's in the car!

However - I have a bit of a query about the clutch operating lever position - see other post.
