Group buy parts purchase?

Post by TC-CLIFF » Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:17 am

hi....dont know if this has been asked before (still a newbie here) or even if im askin in the right section?

seeing as probably the most popular mod for marina's is the front telescopic conversion, does anyone know of a good engineering shop near them to make the top/bottom shock brackets........if say 10 people wanted to order it could be done cheaply with any excess stock soaked up by ebay or MMOC??

TC CLIFF

It makes a lot of sense, however my own practical experience has been that someone has to put their hand in the pocket to kick start projects. The MMOC don't hold any parts stock although I have been trying to persuade them otherwise. It goes back to a few years ago when the club got ripped off by one or two people (ex members) taking club money, buying the stock and then pocketing the sales proceeds themselves; consequently the club has been loath to fund projects. We have arranged for repair panels to be made to order on a short turnaround however, but the buyer pays in advance.

A number of committee members have been funding individual requirements. I am currently funding clutch slaves, steering rack bushes and now instrument pods. Someone else funds all the club regalia.

Telescopic front conversions would be a good candidate for a group purchase, unfortunately I'm tapped out at the moment.

Anyone reading prepared to organise it?

having been in a few owners clubs i know what you mean.......if there was enough interest & a 50% deposit could be taken from each of 10 purchasers (to show willing & pre-fund the process)

as you say, a lot of it depends on the honesty of those dealing with the money side of things

The front suspension on your Marina has lever arm shock absorbers incorporated in the top suspension arms, you can fit a kit so that you have auxiallary telescopic shock absorbers which will improve the handling.

They've not been manufactured for many years so we're discussing whether to create some new ones.

Pedders made a kit in Australia - there was a car on ebay recently that said it was fitted with them.

Pretty sure Selby's still list their sway bar kit on their website ($A275 per end iirc).

Does anyone have the recommended shocks for the SPAX kit? Presumably they used a shock from their standard range? What would be recommended for a lowered car (1.5" - 2") - something adjustable, perhaps?

Did the SPAX kit require any changes to the suspension hardware, like the tie bar?

The Spax kit bolted on and was completely removeable later. The top bracket bolted over the lever arm shock absorber using the same bolt holes and longer bolts, the bottom bracket was bolted together sandwiching the lower arm.

The shock absorber needs a loop at each end and a fully Open to fully Closed travel of 7" (178mm). The old Spax code was G7LL, but they have changed the numbering process. I think that Jim on the Isle of White worked it out, I understand that LDV Sherpa front shocks from the same period will fit if you want a fixed rather than adjustable damper.

I think the Spax kit that is being mentioned here is very similar to the kit I have - it was sold in the States by Koni, the extended bolts allow for the kit to sit over top of the existing Armstrong shock. If anyone wants any more photos/dimensions let me know as it will be on a car this summer.

No that's an Ital setup - totally different.

This is a detail of Garys Mumford currently at Franks Emporium, it shows the top brackets of a Spax/Koni kit clearly.
