North Canterbury Classic Tour

Post by Kilroy » Sun Mar 21, 2010 7:39 am

Hello all.
Today Sue and I attended the 8th annual run titled as above, near Christchurch, New Zealand.
Organised extremely well by a dedicated enthusiast, the run is open to all makes and models from any country of origin.
This means it also encompasses modern cars whose owners consider classics - but from most points of view - the more the merrier.
From Lambos to a 1935 Triumph Gloria - its for the owners who would rather get them out for a good run than have them languish in the shed because it might be "the wrong crowd".

We took the red car - its a manual so its the most frugal on gas - plus it has the best paint, so it gives a good showing for Marinas.
My friend Zeb was there in his pickup, plus his friends in a Mk2 Zodiac.
We gave a good account of a standard Mk3 Marina - albeit lowered with mags - blew off a late model Mazda coupe - whose owner came to say "that goes very well..", and did a 30 mile stint between an AMGRV8 and latest model Alfa Romeo on some very twisty stuff - will almost guarantee they would not believe this was a standard engine...

For the records, we travelled 247 miles and averaged 35.8mpg.
Brilliant day.

This is about one quarter of the assembled crowd at lunch...

Hi Kilroy that's a very nice car you've got ,as you say it seems to have lovely paint on it.
What engine have you got in it giving mpg like that? Looks like you and your mates had a good day of it,nice to see.

Guys
Engine is a standard 1700 O series - at least to my knowledge, as I have not touched it since buying the car.
Gearbox is not the best - but very few are...
I have lowered it and added the wheels, plus attended to dozens of small things that were wrong with it when it arrived - including the gearchange - which meant dropping the box.
Goes well for a stocker.
Cheers.

The 1700 engine is a little belter in good nick - I know my Ital estate will bowl along with modern traffic quite nicely thankyou, and scare a few of them as well.....
The classic car movement needs Jeremy Clarkson like Jenson Button needs a towhitch and a Sprite Musketeer....
