I was thinking about this and perhaps make some smart sarcastic or humerous reply but I held back.

I am one of those people who has a passport though the pic is almost 10 years old and time has not been kind. I also still have a paper driving licence that has no picture, and I intended on avoiding an ID card at all costs. Thankfully the current regime seems to have abandoned that idea.
Does that mean I have to take my passport as its my only form of photo ID?

There was talk in the last parliament of new legislation that required anyone leaving a port or airport having to present photo ID and travel plans when booking. This would have included everyone from fishermen to pleasure craft to commercial operations. I dont think this ever reached the statute books but would have created a vast database of individuals movements! Big brother or what!

I think the difference between the IOW and Ireland is the border issue. Northern Ireland has a largely unpoliced border with Eire and the requirement for a passport stems from that, rather than NI being a separate part of the UK.

Sorry if i'm reading this wrong,but you don't need a British passport to enter either Northern or the Rep of Ireland if you are entering from either England,Scotland or Wales,but a form of "photographic ID" could be of an advantage but this is not compulsory but my help to identify you as who you say you are.

Thanks for the replies. I guess it was a stupid question. I know my dad got himself a passport to go to Ireland and I just assumed that whenever you crossed water to another island you needed a passport.

A couple of years ago, I was flying into and out of Northern Ireland a lot from England on business, you do not need a passport. However you do need some photo ID to get on the sleazy-jet aeroplane when checking in and again at the boarding gate, otherwise you must obviously be some kind of international terrorist, rather than an international Marina-ist.

Photo ID usually has to be a government issued document, so Passport, modern Driving Licence, Building Contractor's National Insurance card etc. I think perhaps a Taxi drivers permit although I'm not sure about that one.

Perhaps needing a passport when visiting Ireland is just my memory then. As I have no other photo ID than my passport, I tend to have it available when travelling far from home, just in case.

The Channel Islands are the same-must have photgraphic ID but most people have passports.

I always take my passport incase I end up in France or such like ( long story why this may be so :roll: )

That's a fog bound Jersey airport story isn't it? The nearest clear landing strip is in France, as I know too well.

Fog or volcanic ash-whatever the reason I've been stranded out there so many times you wouldn't believe. :roll:

I visit Guernsey and Jersey at least 5 times a year ( for work ) and over half of the times flights get cancelled usually because of the weather. Great islands but a sod to get home from it seems!
