Head back on and running. It is still a bit smokey but I guess that could be the amount of oil that has been getting in there burning off. Has anyone tried those products that are supposed to stop smoke by presumably gumming up the oil control rings?
I will be able to see better tomorrow whether it is much better which I'm confident it will be. Difficult to gauge in the dark what's smoke and what is just hot gas on a cool evening in the dark.

I was in Swindon today. I should have thought about it earlier-would have been nice to pop into your work and have a look at the new motor!

The new car is not running great. Still smoking heavily. I am going to take it steady tommorow and leave early. Once home it will be taken off the road. Thoroughly disappointed with it. Not what I was expecting at all.

Have you taken the matter up with the chap you bought the car off ? Seems unlikely he was totally unaware of the problem and might explain why he sold this one and kept his other Marinas.

I haven't no. I don't plan to either. I don't want to get involved in things like that. He seemed like a nice enough bloke so I am going to put it right and draw a line under it. It doesn't stop the disappointment though and kind of puts a downer on it and takes the fun away from owning it.

Very civil attitude you have there Phil...considering that i know all too well that he would definately have taken the matter up with you , had the boot been on the other foot!
Anyway at least the bodyshell was as described...which was really the main reason you went for this particular car , i`m sure you will grow to like her as things get sorted.

Try to avoid disappointment - what you have is the basis of the car you really want. If the final result is a distance from here, then enjoy the journey - it has its own rewards.
I view every car I buy as a new experience, and do not expect it to live up to anyone's expectations.
I buy them because I see something there for me - and that is what I get.
Making them better is part of the fun - and indeed - why this forum exists.
All will be well.

Now undrivable.
It has turned into a smoke machine and the engine is making some very painful noises. I started it up today to move it and promptly switched it off. It'll have to be trailered to Frank now I guess.
