Hi Stevie, standard size would probably have been 145/70 x13, but you could fit 155/70`s or 165/70`s to the standard rims, personally i would go for the 165`s, the wider you can get away with the better she will drive

Re: mk1 tyre size
Hello Marinastevie, 165/70s were originally optional extras on Mk1 1.8s, I'm getting some for my 1.8 saloon as I reckon it will handle a bit better than with the 145s (which belong to my 1.3 coupe anyway). However if your 155s are OK there's no point in changing them for the sake of it, might as well wear 'em out first.

Re: mk1 tyre size
iirc standard UK tyre was 145x13 (145/80x13 in today's terms), which has the same rolling diameter as the "low profile" 165/70x13. Did any models (apart from the commercials) get crossply tyres as standard?Uncle Frank wrote:Hi Stevie, standard size would probably have been 145/70 x13, but you could fit 155/70`s or 165/70`s to the standard rims, personally i would go for the 165`s, the wider you can get away with the better she will drive

Re: mk1 tyre size
I have a number of cars that have 175/70 x 13's fitted.
These appear to be the largest section tyre that can be fitted to the standard rims without adopting an irregular shape.
They do not seem at odds with the smaller sizes as regards gearing at all, yet they look better and give more adhesion.
If I were buying tyres I would want the most rubber for my dollar. Or euro.
I think 175/70's may be the best cost-per-mile solution.
Cheers.
Even look good on this...

The change in gearing between 165/70x13 and 175/70x13 is minimal at 2.5%. Interestingly, the Aussies went for wider tyres right from the start - 155x13 as standard, with 175/70 optional.
