Windscreen wiper wheel box(A CHRISTMAS TREAT)

Post by MARINAMADBAZ » Fri Dec 31, 2010 12:33 pm

My everyday marina suddenly developed a problem with the wipers the other day.
They were working fine and then suddenly the other day the wipers would'nt go across the screen unless i forced the arms across to help the motor.
Right i thought tired wiper motor as the car is on 110,000 and hunted out another seconhand wiper motor to fit.
Got the old motor out and greased the replacement one up and started to fit, fitted it and this one did the same thing would'nt work unless i forced the arms across.
So of it came again, checked some wiring everything seemed ok then i had a break came back out the house and had a thought check the wheel boxes!
You guessed it the drivers side wheel box was seized solid,no wonder the motor would'nt work the wipers.
A pig of a job to do i thought but it had to be done so dials out, brackets and heater vent etc etc to get to the wheel box of.
Luckly the nut that holds the wheel box on came undone ok after i give it the wd40 treatment normally these wont budge and end up smashing them off, i had some new wheel boxes which have a nut on if i needed it.
Got it all back together with a seconhand wheel box on(needed to use my s/h stuff up) that i greased up and made sure nice and free and left the replacement wiper motor on as i think the orignal one maybe a bit tired now if its had to be forcing a seized wheel box.
Everthing back now and wipers sound nice and smooooth!!
Just cant understand why it has seized solid after it was ok,could it be the weather as the car does sit outside all year and this extreme cold conditions have affected it??
Anyway i think the moral of this is before you condem the wiper motor check your wheel boxes,i should know.
Best regards
Barry
P.S HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!!!

The wheel boxes being alloy / mix if you get cold temperatures moisture can build up on the internal surfaces if the grease has dried out and on alloy will corrode fast with a white deposit. Bit like the surface on the alternator or water pump.

Maybe that caused it.

Mine were a git to remove but I had new ones and cut the nuts off with a dremel.
