HELP! AUTOMATIC QUERY.

Post by Uncle Frank » Tue Feb 01, 2011 8:10 pm

Can any of you knowledgeable chaps out there help out with a tech query on Automatics?, got a call from an old customer of mine with a mk1 1800 estate, after many years of faithful service his auto box has lost drive on this car, now the question is...does he need a replacement borg warner 65 or 35 box?, to be honest i`m not sure which one would have been fitted, is there any way of telling them apart?
Any advice much appreciated
Frank.

Hi Frank, from what I know there is basically no difference externally between these 2 boxes. The 65 is, I believe, the later box and it has slightly better internals. The only other difference that I know of is the layout of the selector. The later 65 box has a layout of P R N D 2 1. Think I've got that right. Have you checked the following:- A) The fluid is in good condition
B)The fluid level is correct
C) Basic settings are correct
D) Engine is in a good state of tune

Hop this helps you Frank  .

Hi frank the bodys are different on the gearboxes as far as i know as seen a few at work on the triumph ranges, though i.ve only seen marina/ital 65's and not seen a marina 35 one.
the later 65 uses a different inhibitor switch(rtc36)to the 35's ive seen at work, seperate inhibitior switch and seperate reversing switch so maybe if he could look at this to confirm model no.(black plastic piece with 4 wires coming of it would be the rtc36.
Normally there is a borg/warner serial number plate attached to the gearbox that also tells you the model no.,these are also colour coded so again could look for this.
Hope this is of some help
Best regards
Barry

aussie MK 1 had the borg warner 35, common as fleas on a dog here as most auto cars had them.
in a truimph the 65 is shorter in the case and smaller oil pan than the 35
65 is also beefier inside to take the power  of the stag V8 AFAIK
