How many J plate Marinas are known to survive now???

Post by XER905L » Mon Sep 03, 2007 8:35 pm

I can remember when the Marina was introduced back in 1971. I persuaded my grandmother to buy me a metallic wine colored Corgi Marina, which I still have today but resprayed to match my real TC coupe.
Back in 1971 the BBC made a low budget TV series called ´Spy Trap´ shown after the early evening news, remarkable only for the fact the main character drove a spanking brand new beige Marina saloon. Even more remarkable is that when my father bought a new TC saloon it was also beige, as in that cheesy TV show.
I would be grateful if forum members could share whatever knowledge they have of surviving J plates, because I am very curious to know how many survive, which colors and if any are very close together chassis number wise. Are there any factory colors which no longer exist on a surviving Marina?
i thought my saloon was the only one surviving in Denmark having not seen another since the 1990s until yesterday (a fair number of coupes here tho´).This car I found has had a fresh respray, appears to live outside this brand new built block of flats, and is a Mk1.5 1.3 SDL from 1975 in Flamenco red with typical Mk2 rear lamps, Mk2 window rubbers & inserts and silver plastic rain channel inserts as fitted to the last production Mk1s

One of the few other Marinas still out on our streets is this 1972 1.3 DL Coupe which is not in safe hands belonging to a young guy who uses it to haul around his tools and various lumps of wood (back seat removed as is the panel inside the boot)

Hi XER, the only colour i can think of that i`ve not seen for years on any Marina is a colour called Wild Moss, which was a really dark muddy green, i saw one at Blenheim Palace at a MMOC National back in the 80s` but i`ve not seen one since, most other colours seem to have survived...even Bracken!

Hi Larry, you could be right, it may even be the same car, if it is, it is almost certainly the only one left in that colour, 8) , if that is the case then there is still at least one of all the original colours left out there. 8)

You may be able to obtain the information from the DVLA via the lovely Freedom of Information act. Statistical data such as the number of cars without any location or personal data should fall within the remit for a request. You will have to detail what the information will be used for though and if it will be used in any publication (such as the members magazine or made available in the public domain on this website or the MMOC one)
