Help tracing leaks

Post by JoshWard » Tue Jul 19, 2011 5:22 pm

Hi all,
We all know Marinas leak like sieves but I plan to try and make mine vaguely watertight once I've got the new spring hanger (arrived today :D ) fitted.
Anyway, I've been able to trace most leaks (rear window seal and door seals) but there are still a couple at the front I haven't got to the bottom of.

First is water is collecting on the floorpan side of the inner sill, only a few small drops. Resembles condensation in appearance. Could this be the front window seal?

Next it collects in the box section of the A post which then sits on top of the sill. I'm not sure how it collects in the box section, unless if the front screen seal is leaking and has rotted away part of the surround under the rubber so water is creeping in and down?
Image
It also manages to collect in the sill itself, so there may be a small hole between the a pillar box section and sills.

Help tracing leaks

Post by ClaytonSpeed » Tue Jul 19, 2011 5:49 pm

I get similar leaks on the 1.3 that look like it comes from the door seals as they are quite bad!

Where do ya get the hanger from?

Ben

I get water coming in from between the passenger door seal and the sill and it runs down, but these don't seem close enough to the door seal for that to be the cause of these leaks, particularly the one coming down the inside of the A posts.

The spring hanger came from your dad, looks a bit more heavy duty and a lot less rusty than the original!

Help tracing leaks

Yes they are much better and fairly simple for the welder to fit too!

Glad you are pleased with it.

I shall be watching this thread with interest!!! I hate having most of the nights rainfall in my footwells! Good job it is just a DL with rubber mats!

Just a shame I can't weld so have to get the old one taken off and the new one fitted at a garage! Right next to the fuel line as well....

The only explanation I can think of is the screen seal having tiny holes in it causing it to drip down where the floorpan and inner sill are. As for inside the box section the only explanation I can think of is holes in the screen surround behind the rubber and the water getting inside and dripping down, either that or it's coming in where the door hinges bolt on.

We have very heavy rainfall here at the moment, I'm in the car everyday with my sponge  I don't have much interior at the moment, just the front seats and rubber floor mats. Everything else gets wet!

A post leak could be door switches for the interior lamp. Water may get in behind them?
Mine are the original linread type which I have sealed to the body with screen sealer

Thanks Paul, will give that a try. Have done that already around door hinges etc!

I would think it would not leak around the door hinges as they should have large washers and be done up tight
Plus water gets channeled to the door switch by the door seal.

My N plate leaks there Josh. I made it better by sealing the grommets in the bulkhead where the bonnet release and throttle/choke cables pass. That made it better but not perfect. I don't think mine is the screen seal. More likely a seam. To rule out your screen, whilst the car is laid up anywy Josh, you could get the duct tape out!? I've no idea if the other Marina leaks as I'm scared to get it wet!
