Gold Seal Engine

Post by welshrat » Sun Nov 04, 2012 8:13 pm

Good evening all, new here, just a few questions if thats OK.
Picked up an Ital 1300 engine today that is painted gold. I am aware of the Gold seal and Silver seal replacement units but thought that this service was discontinued well before the Itals came into production. Engine number is BHM1266 ET12029, any information on this engine or general info regarding BMC's engine reconditioning service would be great.

Definitely check it out inside before use is my advice. Where my dad used to work got a batch of new gold seal engines for their vans one year. They were full of silt and gunk!

Gold seal engines and gearboxes were produced well into the 1980s.

My original Jubilee had a gold seal engine fitted after the old one wore out or was very tired. The problem was they fitted the oil control rings on the pistons the wrong way up.
this let oil through every now and then until the bores were like a black mirror. Then it was like Bonds 007 DB5 but in a random fashion letting half a pint of oil out out any one time.

This made the cars behind disappear instantly.
Great if you wanted to loose a tail

Take it apart and check everything.
Easy while engine is out.
Same with a gold seal gearbox.

Gold seal was meant to mean new and silver seal reconditioned. :rolls:

At 60,000 miles I bought and fitted a goldseal engine from a BL agent, at 120,000 miles -ish I took it out and reconditioned it and found steel liners to bring it back to stanard bore size and standard size pistons fitted plus over size main and bigend bearings. I still have this engine ready to refit if legislation forces it upon us.
