MkI boot lid lock retainer?

Post by Martec » Fri Jul 26, 2013 9:32 am

My memory not being what it used to be I vaguely remember someone asking about the strange clip that holds the MkI boot lid lock in place, did the guy get a reply to his question?

I have just removed and refitted it after bare metal re-spraying the boot lid (yes Gary I have waxed it as well) and taken photos of the offending item. If no one is interested I won't faff about trying to put pictures up.

The guy was Chris Knights, he had the General Lee, but has sold it.

However, I would be interested in understanding how you get the clip off as I need to change mine at some point.

The images I can put up are very small, can I send them to you to put on this forum please? Or are you away from home again.

Here are Brian's pics. Brian can you describe how you managed to release the spring clip to get the lock out?

Thank Chris,

Much bigger pictures than I could put up here.

To get the lock housing (shiny bit) out.

first remove the three bolts holding the lock mechanism to the boot lid

In the gap uncovered you can see the 1" long spindle with a small nut on it, this holds the nylon cam and return spring to the lock barrel all together, slacken the nut and unscrew the spindle and it will all come apart and the lock barrel will fall out.

The odd shaped clip will be seen sitting in the groove of the lock housing, I used a thin screwdriver to easy the clip out of the groove on both sides (in practice the clip is not very springy so opened up easily), The housing can then be pushed out of the boot lid.

To refit I just squeezed the clip up a bit and the pushed it over the refitted lock housing and pushed the clip down with the screwdriver until it clicked into place.

Thin double jointed fingers are helpful, or swear at it, that helps.

I co*ked up when stripping the paint off as I also wrecked one of the little plastic push in cup thingys for the badges, I used my finger nails to get one out of a spare boot lid, worth taking them out first.

Best of luck

Badge grommets are available from Minispares
Brian is the thick washer a part you made up or is it original?
My boot lid was modified to fit the old style MK1 lock like yours but I found it a little loose so used 2 rubber sealing washers and that was perfect.

Hi Paul,

The boot lid was a new unused later one, after painting it I found out that MkI and later lids used different locks, so had to stitch weld a washer inside the lid and file to fit the old lock, but it was still loose so adjusted another washer to take up the slack, as you do. then sprayed it again!!!

Due to SH*T rust killer (consigned to the bin many years ago) I've just sprayed it again and I'm now going round the car taking out the rust blisters and patch painting it. I bare metal sprayed the old Jaguar using this stuff, you can imagine what that is like.

Sorry not to see you guys in Devon.
