I love those spike centres! I think the wheels are Cobras aren't they? I prefer them to the Wolfrace ones. I think Scimitar 14" slotmags are the right fitment for the "heavy" commercials.

Well done for getting out there and doing some work on that lovely Coupe Alex- struggling with motivation to get out there and do much with the car on the drive at this time of year.

Today we went on a little, somewhat unplanned, adventure...

I know there was some interest in this on the forum, but I went to have a look last Saturday mostly 'cos I was nosy, and we fancied a day off from working on my friend's Dolomite that provides most of our entertainment. Buying it was certainly an option, but not an intention. However when we looked at it, it was so good that I really felt I should at least discuss the money situation...



My friend was under strict instructions from both myself and (more importantly) Laura not to let me buy it unless it was both very, very good and vaguely sensibly priced. He told me I'd be silly not to buy it, so I did

What are your plans for engine and trans? A 1300 and 4-speed? Or something a bit different? Transplant a K-series 1.4 and Fiat 5-speed from a Polonez, would make a nice "sleeper"

Plan is to keep it pretty much standard Bryan (but it will be a manual- it's a shame I know but I have all the bits to do a manual conversion and to be honest the idea of a 1300 auto doesn't really fill me with joy!).

It's too original (even with the missing bits!) to mess around with. The only other change I think I'll make is to fit slightly wider wheels & tyres- I've a set of the 5.5" wide marina type (possibly TR7?) steels that I'll have powdercoated & fit. Will keep the originals too of course.

If they are TR7 rims, check to make sure they have the three little 'lumps' to fit the hub caps over.

I don't think they do Chris- I'll be keeping the originals (with new tyres- I've not checked the codes but I've a suspicion 3 of them may be original...) as well, they are part of the car & I want to keep it as original as I can, manual conversion excepted.

But I've a set of the 5.5" ones with new tyres that will do for now (if the tyres will fit under the arches anyway). Have a set of trim rings and will find something (Triumph Spitfire?) to go in the centres.

I had 5.5" TR7 rims on my Coupe that had no hubcap lugs on them. I welded three 'lumps' onto each wheel and then just used the grinder to shape them to the same rough shape as the original lugs. Loved those wheels with hubcaps as they were subtle and had a lotus cortina vibe to them. Here's just about the only pic I have of them on my mates coupe..

Changed my steering rack yesterday. Removal was relatively easy and did it with out removing any
of the dash etc. All came undone. Top clamp nut by the heater box was a bid fiddly, but you can get
in there with a long thin socket and lots of extensions!.

The part I required help with was on fitting the donor rack back up and trying to get the u-bolt clamps
back in though while somebody did up the nuts inside. Also getting the steering column back onto
the spline shaft was a bit of a pig. Not something I'd like to repeat in a hurry but needed doing due to
a worn out bearing on the p/side.

Not much room to get a spanner in but helpfull if your long-armed!

First attempt. About two and a half hours with some messing about in-between. I also had to prepare the
donor rack in that time (fit new gaitors and oil rack) before attempting to fit. Old one came out in
under an hour but was a bit of a pig getting the new one in. I had meant to fit some new poly bushes
instead of re-using the old rubber ones, but they were so stiff it made it impossible to get the clamps
in and gave up trying after running out of energy trying to push it all up into place. I used the old
ones as, to be fair, they looked like new and had no wear to them. The worst part was trying to get the
column back onto the toothed spline. Once that was in place it made it a lot easier. Not something I'd
like to repeat in hurry!
