For the Love of Cars- Channel 4

Post by JoshWard » Mon Apr 21, 2014 12:20 am

New series on Channel 4, bit like some of the other shows out there at the moment (buying a car, restoring it, selling it for a profit), started tonight. Don't know how many of you saw it but Marinas (Police TC to be specific) got a mention although not particularly complimentary  The car they restored was a MK1 Escort Mexico

Available on 4OD, Marina is mentioned at just after 32 minutes

Yes I saw it Josh, great programme too!, that is probably the programme they wanted the Police Marina for :rolls: , still I suppose it was true enough, if only the Police got ST to sort their cars first, may have been a different story ;) :-D

Probably for the best though, I would never be able to have a Marina if they went for the same prices as Escorts do  Not to mention the number of classic fast Fords that get stolen so probably for the best

If their fleet of cop cars was replaced in 73 then I guess the Marinas may have been 71s, I can't see the force wanting to stump up to replace cars which were only a year old. Therefore they would have probably been on the early suspension too which wouldn't have helped matters

Quite liked the finished product and I'm not a big Ford fan, lovely colour 8-) Good programme too, better than certain other 'restoration' shows  Looks like they put a lot of effort into it, shame they didn't show that much of the actual restoration work.

saw the program better than some i've seen ;) ... and for the Escort V Marina.... the friend i sold my Bentley too was a Police Driver in the 70s and he has said Marinas weren't the best cars in the world but quite capable of keeping up and catching the crims in the Fords, Vauxhalls and other BL products of the day.. it's not always the car in most cases its the driver, nothing worse than a high performance car with a low performance driver ;)

Totally agree with you Josh, I can see it now, MK1 2 door Marina shell, absolutely rotten, complete with V5, no engine or interior, £5000! Lets thank BL for not giving us front anti roll bar and giving us lever arms, it's saved us thousands, it is a shame that they didn't do anything really exciting!

Actually they did but as usual nothing ever made it to production. They made a MG Marina, they started playing with turbos in the 50's with the MG TF 1500 using a diesel turbo, they turbo'd the B series diesel but that never made it to production (can you imagine when diesel was so cheap in the 70's how fleets could have had diesel Marinas that weren't 37bhp!) They turbo'd the O series in 1980 and that could have made a special Ital Turbo and Ital Diesel B Series Turbo as I know Ford were producing Granada Diesels non turbo using Perkins Peugeot 505 style diesel engines and Sierra 2.3 diesels. They even made a Turbo TR7

So many Ford Mexico,s 800 on the records!!!! Makes them so common as that is about the total of all Marina Ital Models.
I would rather have a car that actually is rare :D
I am surprised that the Police did not get ST to do the cars but maybe they were to costly. Cost does not put them off now

Good show but sad that copper had to say all the daft words about Marina's, I seem to keep up with most modern stuff in my TC and occasionally they don't get out of my way fast enough

I remember my 1.8 mk2 Marina keeping up with a 1600 Mk2 Escort...bit hairy on the bends but great fun:grin:

Mk 1...progressing nicely, MK 3...under wraps.

Another channel which jumps on the slag off the Marina bandwagon.

The funny thing is they spoke of 'British Heritage' Just because the car was made in Dagenham, yet it was still funded, designed, badged and even marketed by the Americans... The Marina is as British as British can be....

The asking price for them is a bit much too, as mentioned before these cars are FAR rarer than those Escorts.

I have 15 Jubilee's on record which are still about.
6 are on the road, about 3 are in good order but sorn - may need work to finish or re-commission, one is in a museum others are in need of restoration big time.
To honest it has been a while since I have updated the list but it has not changed a great deal.

I think the ones which have made most progress are Kevin's, yours, and the one in Dudley which is fantastic and was for sale last November.
Some have been in restoration phase for quite some time!! A matty
