prop shaft night mare

i have changed the prop shaft centre bearing brand new fine. and u j but when driving car 1.3 mk 3 terrible vibration over 20 mph. having a stress loosing my mind over this. m o t is on the 02 08 14 so having a night mare can i send my prop anywhere for recon or is my mk 3 doomed to be broken by the minor boys dred :thumbdown:

There are plenty of prop shaft and drive shaft specialists around the country, you should be able to get all the UJs replaced and the whole thing rebalanced like new for around £120-150. Where are you in the country, I'm sure that someone on here will be able to recommend a localish reputable company.

Have you put the sliding joint back together in the same orientation it came off? They are balanced as an assembly, if you put it back together with the splines rotated from their original position then you'll throw the balancing out.

As Chris said, plenty of propshaft specialists about. I know of one in Bristol, although they are a bit slow, I seem to remember Frank had the custom prop for the ST made up by somewhere in the Midlands? Or if you are somewhere coastal, look for a Marine engineering place, they are called propshafts after all ;)

You might get away with a simple rebalance, which should be fairly quick & reasonably cheap too.

From my hazy memory of rebuilding the Coupes propshaft, the sliding spline has one double width spline so it can only be fitted one way round.

Could be wrong.

I used a company on Luton when I had my special Type 9 propshaft built up.

Ahh, that was sensible of them- must admit I've not looked that closely at a Marina one, the Dolomite one from memory can go on in any orientation.

Ignore that then! Think Ad's for the Dolly was about £250 with new UJs/ splined section (splines were worn)/ centre bearing & balanced. Hopefully yours will need less than that!

I have loads of propshafts here if that helps
Ive put centre bearings on mine and have had no problems
I could put you a new centre bearing on if this helps and you could keep yours as a spare
my mk3 developed a problem last year at the bmc/bl Peterborough rally the car wouldn't go any faster than 40mph lost all power and terrible vibration,i put it down to either the diff or prop,i changed the prop and the problem was cured
I still have the old prop it may have lost its balance the centre bearing looked ok.

In my Opinion and presuming that you did not have the vibration, before dismantling the propshaft it is almost certainly something that you have done. Possibly fitted the Centre Bearing Backwards. Got the Joint very tight when changing the UJ, should be free to move from one side of yoke to the other, or fitted both halves of the propshaft back together incorrectly on the sliding joint. ( favourite) You should end up with the two propshaft yokes off set by 90 degrees. There may be some factory paint marks visable if you clean the shaft up well around the sliding joint area. There should be no need to rebalance the propshaft after the repairs have been carried out unless you have bent it in some way. If you could post a picture of the Propshaft off the car it may be possible to see what is wrong.
