Hi Paul
I thought someone would notice. Yes very similar, that's what made be post it, it's on the 633, but probably the equivalent 5 series as well.

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
Spent most of the day disabling my Jubilee's automatic petrol tank emptying system for hot show days
Well this must be the 3rd time I have tried to water grass with or melt tarmac with petrol!
With some advice and help of a good fellow MMOC member it was pointed out what the problem was (I hope) the top breather on the tank was to long which meant it filled with petrol and then no longer acted as a breather, so when hot it decided to come out of the tiny air breather on the other side of the filler neck.
And yes it was full of petrol
This was not to much of a problem before as this smaller pipe went out below the level of the body. When it decided to empty the tank, normally it started when I was not around, so on my return I would smell a nice petrol smell.
This time however was a bit different as I had cut this smaller pipe shorter thinking this was the cause, only to find out that it was not. After looking at the petrol pouring out for a while and watching all the under seal dissolving in the grass and trying to stop it, I had done every thing I could think of and still petrol poured out
I decided to open the boot to check if there were more leaks than first thought only to find the boot well had half a litre of petrol in which was still draining away
So by complete accident I had discovered I had a gap in the panel below the petrol flap which was letting the petrol from the short small breather pipe flow in to the boot.
I had to push out the gromet in the boot well to drain the petrol on to a rag and then got rid of the rag in a nearby skip
Today after breaking a few fingers and dislocating my wrist I managed to cut back the larger breather pipe and re-attach to the petrol filler neck and put a longer pipe back on the small breather.
I also filled the panel gap up and re-applied the missing under seal so fingers crossed the petrol will stay in the tank
The daft thing is the top breather for the tank is a different size to the position on the filler neck so finding a pipe which goes from one to the other is impossible. What I have done this time is to fit a reducer at the neck of the tank which reduces the inside bore from 12mm or 1/2 inch to 9.5mm approx.
Once I had cut the pipe off the filler neck there was no way I was going to get a 4 year old pipe back on as there was no lead in on the filler neck just a sharp pipe. Christ knows how I got it on there when I put the tank in? but I guess the pipe was not as old and more flexible / forgiving.
Also gave some of the car a wash as it was plastered with muck after the rain on the way up to Peterborough. Ran out of time to do rest so finish off tomorrow
Now I know why when I used the car in the wet a small puddle appeared!

Popped down to see Brian White today. He is currently storing an Ital van for Chris Bass which is rather beyond redemption. Fortunately the wings weren't too bad and ideal for using to repair CVF's ones
The Ital really was a heap, when I opened the door most of the door skin came off the frame, then the door fell off! Nothing left of the A posts and one of the A pillars came off in my hands!

I went down in Milly because it just so happens Brian lives on the same road as the dealership which sold her way back in 1973 and again in 1977. The buildings survive but have been heavily altered over the years.

Mud spent the weekend at the "Gloucestershire Steam Extravaganza", an extremely cheesy snap of our convoy prior to heading home on Sunday evening. Ended up taking 2 hours to do the 20- odd miles
It wasn't Mud that broke down!

I got to have a go at steering a steam roller too, great fun.

Nice one Matt, how does a traction engine handle compared to a Marina?
Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
Hi Paul,
Sorry to hear about your petrol dump valve malfuncioning , bit of a bummer.
Hope you've got it sorted now.
Richard phoned me monday, with fuel dumping news as well.
After i left his house sunday, he came out to move the LE only to find a stream of his fuel waving him goodbye down the road.
there were 2 splits in the fuel pipe under the bonnet & it decided to siphon out.
He got it plugged to stop the flow, them spent ages hosing the road clean.
It looks like we were lucky to get back without breaking down, so new hoses thoughout now.
Things usually go in threes so who's next........
Gil.

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
It's a bit slower to react (chain steering and rather low ratio, something to do with the weight of the front rolls...) but probably more predictable once it's in a cornerMarinaCoupe wrote:Nice one Matt, how does a traction engine handle compared to a Marina?
It takes quite a lot of thought- for something moving so slowly you have to think ahead. Still lighter on the steering than the Diamond T (the desert sand one) though.
Perhaps we are Gil's third "these things come in threes" as we ended up assisting with the recovery of one of our local timber yard's fleet of classic timber lorries + living van after it broke down with, you guessed it, fuel problems!

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
Gil do you know what fuel hose Richard was using? I wonder if it's another case of ethanol fuel rotting the piping from the inside.

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
Decided to change the front bumper over to my new one (Thanks to Gary!!)
As I was removing the number plate I noticed.................a strong petrol smell!!! Not again! I though this was the carbs floats over flowing but when I inspected the leak seemed to be the fuel pump and as I had a leak from that on the IOW I assumed wrongly that the brass pipe had come away again.
It was not this at all as it was still solid after my fix a few years back.
it was the fuel pipe from the tank to pump (Short bit) the inner rubber had perished and petrol poured out of the stainless outer. had a rummage in the shed and found some new unleaded fuel pipe and replaced. Then found the pipe that went from the pump to the filter was also shot. Had to replace this one.
The pipe I fitted was sold as unlead fuel pipe and has lasted 4 years!!!
I will be replacing ALL THE CARB PIPE WORK AS WELL AND ANY OTHER PIPE COVERED IN STAINLESS. The stainless outer means you can't see how perished the pipe actually is.
the inner rubber looked more like a string bag than a pipe.
I have had many problems keeping water out and petrol in but I have won with water and soon I will have the petrol under control.
I did get the bumper on after I had sorted the petrol

Re: What did you do to your Marina today?
Paul, I think that you highlight the problem very well, unleaded fuel hose is not the same as ethanol resistant fuel hose. Look for SAE 30R7
This the link to the Goodyear reference page.

Well thats definitely no 3 for fuel leaks.MarinaCoupe wrote:Paul, I think that you highlight the problem very well, unleaded fuel hose is not the same as ethanol resistant fuel hose. Look for SAE 30R7

Thats an excellent point about only fitting pipe rated as SAE 30R7 Chris , I thought the unleaded pipe was fit for purpose
& have fitted braided pipe to the electric fuel pump on the ital ( luckily haven't got any on front yet ) so thats going to come off again.
A good point paul, braided pipe looks very nice, but you cant see whats going on underneath it.
There's going to be a lot more reports of fuel loss at this rate.
With the ethernol content likely to be increased in future years, the sooner we all change to this ethanol resistant hose the better.
Thanks for the " heads up " Chris.....
Gil.
