UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
I think I know the answer to this one but I'll ask anyway.
You can get a mod to fit the rear axle to eliminate the weak points. See link.
http://www.rakeway.co.uk/page37.html
They currently have none in stock but are commissioning a batch of 6 hopefully soon.
Just wondering if anyone else was interested in a kit?
Maybe a multiple buy might bring the price down?
Currently going to cost £990 per kit which takes me back to my opening line........

Re: Half shaft and hub modification - Rakeway
What you doing to your car that you need a stronger hub?
I know the half shafts break if you are racing about on a track but I am sure you don't get that stress on the road

Re: Half shaft and hub modification - Rakeway
Just an insurance policy. I think the replacement hun is to do away with the weak point of the half shaft.
My TC should have 50% more power than standard soon so thought it best to look into at least. Needs an LSD too.

Re: Half shaft and hub modification - Rakeway

Re: UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
A company called redline components have uprated half shafts in stock. They say they have been used in caterham 1700bdr's (?!?!?!) rated at 170bhp so should have no problem even with a pretty serious modded TC.

Re: UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
Car weights - 600kg against 975kg, even standard half shafts will last longer.
Re: UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
Is weight that relevant in the case of half shafts?

Re: UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
The half shaft is the last link in the drivetrain before the tyre. All the engine torque goes through the half shafts to turn the wheels to move the weight of the vehicle, the half shaft is the weakest link. That's why 'drop the clutch' starts break half shafts.
Re: UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
I have destroyed many other drive-line components by 'dropping the clutch'!MarinaCoupe wrote:The half shaft is the last link in the drivetrain before the tyre. I understand that. I'd have thought grip at the tyre ( resisting the turning force ) would have played a bigger part though guess weight of vehicle plays a part in this?MarinaCoupe wrote:The half shaft is the last link in the drivetrain before the tyre. Re: UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
Yes exactly, the lighter the car the less downforce/mass pushing down. The lighter the car the earlier the wheels start spinning. Spinning away the torque rather than stressing the mechanical elements of the drivetrain.
Re: UPDATE! Half shaft and hub modification - other options.
At £168 per half shaft its a lot cheaper than the Rakeway kit.
I might try this option first. If I break one then I guess I go the rakeway route. At least I'll have standard half shaft to carry as a spare on a long journey :-/
