clutch cylinders

Post by marcusthemoose » Thu Jan 01, 2015 8:25 pm

Wednesday morning i collected my marina after it had supposedly been in for work ( long story don't ask) but i could not select any gears from stationary. Garage say it was like it when they got it which is not the case, but its got to go elsewhere now for the work it was supposed to be having done there.

I am assuming its either the clutch master or slave cylinder as after some messing about i have managed to get some sort of functioning clutch.

Are both cylinders still available new? In previous experience i have found its better to fit new if its available rather than just fit new seals.

Where can i get new ones/ recon ones or if push comes to shove a rebuild kit?

Car is a 1976 1.3 deluxe.

Thankyou in advance

I agree with Dave, check if the clutch plate is stuck to the flywheel before you start replacing parts.

Had a look at this on Friday and there was bugger all fluid in the reservoir. Slave or master is gone we suspect, as does a mechanic friend after looking at it- either that or the clutch diaphragm has gone.

Where can I get new cylinders or seals from?

I see there were refurbished slave cylinders for sale in the last copy of understeer

Yes that's through me. I keep clutch slaves reconned with a stainless steel liner on the shelf, but I don't keep seal kits as there are plenty on EBay. I have one clutch master at the moment. Everything is on exchange only basis.

To find out witch cylinder is at fault. Check arround the clutch pedal and on the bell housing for signs of brake fluid leakage, you may even have to peel back the dust boots on the cylinders. I have also seen the red flexi pipe also leaking in the past.

okay thanks for that, i may be in contact depending on what plan of action i decide to take (i.e what the bore is like on either cylinder)

the master cylinder is one with a large plastic top, not like the old tin can type.

The master cylinder is the one attached to the pedal and slave cylinder is in the bell housing attached to the gearbox

The one with the large plastic top is the Brake Master Cylinder, not the clutch master cylinder.

yes i had a quick look and couldnt see leakage on either at a glance, but one of them must be gone!

its in for a steering bush and the MOT (cringe) so the clutch problem is being done at the same time ( the car is stuck with very little functioning clutch almost 100 miles away at my parents house).

the red flexi pipe has been replaced by a piece of copper brake pipe in the past- not sure whether this is a good thing or not...

i should think the one with the servo on is the brake master cylinder, which is the other one- my clutch master looks like this

That's not a standard Marina or Ital clutch master cylinder, all Marina/Ital ones are the tin can type. This one is most likely a Spitfire one that has been adapted to fit. They are the same bore diameter so make no difference to the clutch actuation.

ahhhh, that would explain why its a bit different to the others i have seen- i had assumed that good ol BL had changed OE cylinders at sometime- but it wouldnt surprise me if it had been change- i think my car has been messed about with somewhat in its life
