what colour is this?

Post by marinabuoy » Thu Jun 04, 2015 11:21 am

Hi all, looking for some help to identify this colour.

Image

I've got as far as green - but even that's not a certainty as I'm pretty colourblind and green is one of the colours I don't pick up too well… Anyhow, been trying to look at colours from 1972 (or 71? - I'm told car was built in first week of '72.) I think it's probably Mallard Green, or could be Wild Moss? Racing Green? Hopefully this is an easy enough question for someone who knows what they're looking at? This is still the original paint although it's worn / polished through in a few places, but it's still ok because the original sticker is still there telling me it is!

Image

So hoping for now to get away with a bit of a T-cut and then just get a small tin mixed up for some touching up here and there. And whilst I'm asking - think interior is probably Ochre? But if it was Olive, or Limeflower, I wouldn't really be able to tell…

It's Green Mallard with a Limeflower interior :) They were built in batches of colours so mine from the same batch is the same colour scheme as yours.

Ochre was a later interior colour, think it came in around 1973. Olive was darker and by now has usually turned dark brown/grey!

You'll have to make sure you get the right Mallard, Austin Morris used Green Mallard and Triumph used Mallard Blue. Both are bluey greens!

Wild Moss is a lot sludgier, it looks almost black in some lights. There are only two Wild Moss cars known to have survived. There is only one Racing Green Marina known to survive, that colour was dropped in 1971, presumably replaced by Green Mallard which is also quite an uncommon colour.

Brilliant, cheers.

Paint code I got online somewhere for Green Mallard is BLVC 22 or ICI 7925? Hopefully this is all I'll need in my local paint supplier.

Although none of this will really make any difference to me as I won't be able to see the difference anyhow, but I'd rather get it right than wrong!

Yes that's right. I've managed to get it when asking for the BL code so hopefully you will be able to as well

I admire your determination to get it right!

Hi ya, before you use T cut on it, I would recommend you trying the Autoglym paint restorer 1st, it is probably a bit more expensive than T cut, I used it on my TC Jubilee that hadn't been polished in 30 plus years, and after a couple of goes it came out really well. After using the paint renovator I used the Super Resin polish, also Autoglym. It isn't cheap stuff but it does actually work!

These are just a couple of pics of my Jubilee, one from the day I got it out the garage, then two goes once at home with the paint renovator on the wing, to the whole car, this was just polished up! So hope this helps, Good luck. Image

Yeah, that looks like a great result, car looks very smart, thanks for the tip. I'll think I'll give that a go. The only other tip I've had here locally was 'smear it all over with baby oil' ! I'll probably not be giving that a go, at least not with the Marina anyhow..

So been making a bit more progress now that I've finally got a tin of the right paint - took out seats, parcel shelf, carpet etc. Some bits of the floor were starting to look a bit rusty, but all still solid and now definitely looking much greener than before!

Won't be putting any carpet back in until I find out where the water's been getting in though..

The floor looks superb now! I am guessing the car is quite low mileage to have survived so well?

Cheers, there's 86K on the clock, and I'd say for most of it's years it's been one Very Careful owner - when I first took the hubcaps off they were numbered inside - I can only presume to make sure the right hubcap went back on the right wheel?! Funny thing is, they were just numbered 1 2 3 4 (on little squares of paper stuck on with sellotape!) so you'd have to have a strange kind of memory to remember which hubcap went where…

Wow that has survived seriously well for a car that has done 86k! The owner must have adored it!
