New engine - should I pack the oil pump with vaseline?

Post by martinclan » Mon Apr 28, 2025 11:30 am

I am about to refit the B-series engine in my Marina based Marlin. Yey!
The engine has been stood arround for many (20+?) years before being rebuilt by myself a couple of years ago. I think I read somewhere that it can be difficult to get the oil circulating well again on the the B-series- probably on some random MGB website, so should I pack the oil pump with vaseline?
What have others done?

Cheers, Robin

I packed mine with Vaseline, worked fine engine done over 10,000 miles with good oil pressure. Also if you have rebuilt the whole engine you can pack the gudgeon pins with Vaseline and when the engine gets hot you get a much needed lubrication on a new engine cylinder bore. Vaseline when the temperature gets hot in the engine it melts away in to the oil and the small amount does not affect the oil. If a new engine then the oil is changed after 500 miles after run in. Plus head torqued down.
