Black and white/silver number plates can only be fitted to a motor car registered before the First of January 1973.

i wonder where they get them from as suppliers at work won't make them unless the car is pre 73.

The person must have contacts in the trade to get these plates made up. Usuall suppliers will ask to see reg docs nowadays if they dont know you when requesting plates made up as this happened to a mate of mine a few months ago so I had to order them for him.

I got stopped last year in my 1972 Austin Marina van and the copper tried to do me on the black and white plates. He just made a complete arse of himself when I told him of the cut off date. He even called his control room to ask them the date and even they didnt know the exact date. Thank Fcuk he was more interested in my plates as 1 off my tyres was showing the metal wire. I quickly said my goodbyes and carried on with my journey round the block to free off my sticky brakes in my housing estate. The van has been parked up ever since awaiting the restoration

It is possible to buy "show plates" over the internet. They have a rider which says "these are not for use on a public road".

I would imagine so Chris. There are a few folk on the bay selling plates made to order when you give them your reg number
