mumford resto restarting

Post by norway_triumph » Sun Jul 01, 2007 8:48 am

As some of you know i started dismantling the mumford a year or 2 back. Since i've now finished the "busy-period" at work for this year :) I decided that what better way to use your extra spare time than tackle the chassis repair. The plan beeing to have the shell welded up and painted this year. and then we'll have to see how long putting the bits back together will take. I'm not tackling all the welding by myself as i have the luxury of having 2 good friends that have done this sort of thing a LOT more than i have - as some of the repairs looks too complicated for a novice like me.
Anyway thought i could share some photos while i'm at it so here are the current state of the car. pretty much like i left it - i think it was 1,5 years back (time fly by - doesn't it :) )
Image

on the second pic you could see all the flaking due to poor preparation on a previous paint job that the car have had - anyone know the car - by chance. The uk -reg was HCV 354N - i bought it back in 2002 (large cogs turn slowly :D )

Hi Jan Ivar, looks familiar!!!, are you fitting new sills?, if so let me know i`ve got a really good modification for you that works like a charm on Mumfords, improves the feel of the car 100% on the road

i'm guessing welding a "strengthening-bar" inside the sill :)
Actually the sills together with the RH front wing are the soundest part of the car so i'm leaving them alone. Have you kept the inside strengtening-bar on your as well as stiffening the sill ?

Todays action saw a bit of grinding some cutting into the places i already suspected and knew of, and some new interesting rot revealed :)

Usual wing & lamp panel rot
Image

not too bad on the underside
Image

except for this bit
Image

usual holes in the floor - but i've had them much worse
Image

This is the bit that actually conserns me the most as i once helped a straightening a chrashed renault 5 and i never got the windscreen water-thight - well thats a completely different story :)

the top rail is so rotten there is no other option than replacing
Image
Image

Both rear wings need replacement as the mumford conversion on the middle window is rotted away and that area consist of about 2-3 cm thick with filler insted. I have a new LH rear-wing but for the right i'll cannibalize one of my parts car. The same car thats letting go off it's windscreen-frame :) Also both doors, bonnet, and bootlid are gone- but those are easily replaced.

Hi Jan Ivar, yes i was meaning the inner sill mod, and yes i did leave the inside original ones in place, that is why it made such a difference  , I have put a brief description of how to do this mod just in case you decide to go for it, on my workshop pages, good luck with the rest, it looks like you will need it, be very careful when you cut out the floors or sills, the door aperture can move very easily, unless you have a pair of door bars i would weld in a couple of temporary stiffeners just in case.

nice tip about the door-aperature. I have a hydraulic ram set for straightening cars . I'll put that to use and do one side at the time :)

When you replace the windscreen surround i found it best to cut the frame half way down each pillar, that gives you plenty of straight section of pillar to let in a 20cm x 2cm x 4mm length of steel bar inside each pillar to help you locate it properly, if you drill four or five weld holes each side of the join on the pillar, you can weld each bar in place then slot the top section into place, weld up the top section weld holes then weld the pillars all the way round to finish, this works really well and makes a strong joint.

When you are ready to cut the frame off Jan Ivar, make yourself a big stiff card template of the windscreen aperture before you cut anything, make it so it fits tightly into the surround like a screen would without the rubber  , that way you will know for sure that the screen will fit.
If you haven`t got any card then a piece of hardboard or ply would probably do

Before you cut off the screen top rail make up a frame that fit snugly in the screen aperture. Also when you cut the frame, stagger the cuts inside & out, drill some of the spot welds so you can have at least 3 inches overlap, you then can respot the inner & outer frames & this takes the stress away from the frame where it is welded & helps alleviate future problems with stress cracks.

this weekend + friday as i took a day of :) saw some mumford resto action . First off we started on the left hand side, a small patch to the wheel inner tub,
Image
then it was time to remove the front wing
Image

the inner wing wasnt bad at all just needing a small patch on top and at the very bottom lower a-panel (suprise) .

work is well underway at this stage

new front wing and lamp panel on
Image

bonnet for the sharp-eyed of you is mkII and used only for alignment - i'm treating the old girl with a nos bonnet :)
Image

sunday after some more grinding and welding i thought i would change the rear brake cylinders on my corsair for a change. ... Drove the car out of the barn, changed bort rear cyl. and the rear brake pipe. bled the brakes and was feeling quite happy. then it started to rain and as the entrance to the barn is over the field and when it rains it almost impossible to get th ecar in. so i rushed it a bit, but when entering the barn disaster struck
Image
fu** x 10
Also the wing was full of filler the part that fell off was 13 mm thick !!
Image
Well, as there is nobody to blame but a stupid fxxx like myself i guess next weekend will se some corsair repair rather than mumford resto.... :(

Good work Jan Ivar, shame about the old Corsair!! i`ve not seen one of those for ages  , the Mumford is coming along well, it would be nice if we could beat the record 3 at any one meeting, maybe next year we could muster up 4?, what do you reckon?, how about you Gary? 8) :)
