Lever arm shockabsorber oil.
Hi, can anyone recomend the grade/type of oil used in front lever arm shox's.
I have three set's of shox's for the Kit-Car but they all feel different, some stiff in one direction , some notchy. So I decided to strip and check some. The oil coming out was thick and lumpy, so after a good bath in degreaser and a blow out I rebuilt them using standard engine oil (just to test) and now the "cleaned" ones are working fine.
Only doubt I have is to what viscosity/grade the oil should be, or a substitute if it's not available. Was considering the Ital conversion but too much to do just yet to get this thing back on the road.
Any help or advise appreciated.

If it ain't broke take it apart anyway,at least you will know how it works when it does break.

Thanks for the reply's. I have two of them now filled with 15w50 synthetic oil at the moment, so this sounds somewhere in between the 30w and 75-90w of the gear oil. Might try a lighter oil in one of the other pairs and see how much difference it makes to the resistance.
Just a bit further, can anyone tell me if there are rubber seals on the two hydrolic pistions inside the unit or are they just machined to size. Has anyone else tryied to "service" theres and to what result, or has everyone just gone for the conversion??

Lokks a pig of a job to remove the pivot shaft. When you take the top plate off, you can see it has been chiseled to between the pivots to stop it pulling out. I would imagine you would have to clean this off first before you pulled the shaft out, but then how do you re-secure the shaft to stop it "slidding" out. My advise so far is to find a good secondhand pair with no play and clean all the old oil, sludge and metal filings out, then re fill with oil of your choice. The ones ive done so far were notchy, slipping and locking, but no are smooth all the way up and down. Still not too sure what oil to put in. Might go for the 30w hydrolic oil as the cars only a light weight.
