help!!

was driving my marina back from the petrol station today when it started lurching, a few miles up the road it got really bad as if the brakes were stuck on, made it home just and checked all the brakes no problem there, and now it wont start, checked the plugs and there quite sooty checked the points and rotor arm i think it may be a electrical problem somewhere not sure if a missfire would make it lurch as it did??
would be great if any one has any ideas as iv missed a car show today and i have work tonight and another car show tomo!

First thought is a fault on the ignition circuit. Have you got a spark?

Are the connections to the coil solid, both HT and LT. Have you checked the distributor, the braided flex wire to the points can be a problem.

A loose connection can cause an intermittent problem.

just borrowed my brothers king lead and ht leads of his austin which is 1300 to
got a spark the car does run but not for long, started taking carbs apart so i think it may be them as there was alot of rubbish in the float chamber so il try that tomorrow

didn't put diesel in by mistake? seeing that it started playing up just after you filled up?

Stranger things have happened! But if a plug was taken out I would have thought it would smell of deisel. Failing that sniff the tank or better still read the reciept. Dont let anyone see you sniff the tank, you might worsen your reputation.

Its step by step again. Check the electrics, check the fuel. Could it be a failing pump, we have seen a few of them recently.

Check the choke hasn't stuck on. I had this on one of my cars and it caused a lot of headscratching; it would start OK then slowly die, it felt like I was dragging an anchor along.

thanks for all the replys, im certain i didnt put diesel into her, going to take the carb apart today as its pretty dirty anyway, had a old friend look at it who used to work on them at the time and he thinks its that now as we have checked all the plugs, leads, dizzy cap rotor arm condenser and so on! il get back on here tonight to let you know if shes running yet!

I think you are certainly looking in the right place. Did you have a near empty tank when you filled her up? You might find the filter on the sender unit (in the tank) has split causing rubbish to be sucked up.

You can buy decent inline filters on eBay once you get it sorted.

still no luck today changed the fuel, added a filter, cleaned carb and jets changed coil checked fuel pump, i was welding yesterday but i did take the battery leads of so tomorrow im going to change the points and condensor after that im really running out of ideas!

What about the timing being out?

I had a similar thing happen to me once, I was on my way back from the local classic car garage only to end up running on one cylinder by the time I got into my village Was lurching and doing about 15mph in top speed. Turns out my timing marks are useless :roll:

Nice one, it might be worth getting one of the Accuspark electronic ignition kits. Only about £30 and they work very well indeed once you've set the timing up right. Fits inside the distributor and replaces the capacitor and the points.

My front wings are only held on by riveted patches at the moment Probably going to go for fibreglass ones as metal ones will just rot again and I can't afford them My front valance is rather rotten too
