Marina Rally-mobiles

Post by purplecoupe » Wed Oct 17, 2007 4:14 pm

Hello everyone!

Ok last thing I got done on the coupe was getting the awful musty carpets ripped out as they were a tad wet and smelly! I'm now trying to decide what to put in their place when the time comes. I'm hoping at some point to road rally the car, so everything I do obviously has to be in period.

Has anyone got any pictures of how the rally marina's were inside, or if anyone knows what would have been on the floor that would be handy to know? I don't really want to put a new carpet in, and other than one small hole on the floor, the rest of it is in immaculate condition (Which made a nice change!!)

Thanks!
- Rachel

I haven't got any pictures but I would Imagine either no coverings or a DL/Van rubber moulded mat type interior. Probs just be bare floor pan with a foot rest for the co driver.

hi ya
if you are just road rallying which is more down to a good navagator with the od speed test keep the carpet.
lee striped out the carpets in the blue one and it ok to start with but by the end of a long day you will need ear plugs.
the car will not need to much doing to make it fit for a rally and yes you will upset most GM drivers on the test's in fact the marina is faster than a lot of cars from that time just go for it .

Hiya,

Thanks for that guys, I think as the carpets are now out (They were pretty bad, and there was a lot of damp being held in underneath them) I shall leave them out and just go with the rubber mats. Chris Weedon told me about a place that does new carpets made to shape so if the noise gets a bit too much I may think about adding them in at a later date.

I'm hoping to keep the engine and gearbox as standard, and technically speaking not change that much really, probably just the standard carb with a better filter on, and I'm hoping that someone will buy me a set of polybushes for Christmas this year. I think she'll be a fun little thing to road rally though!

Yeah I was lucky, the car already had discs on the front, and the pads that were in the calipers looked next to new, likewise the shoes on the rear, and the front section of exhaust. I have a feeling that someone possibly bought the car to get back on the road, and then gave up after buying several new service parts, because the wings look new as well. Shame they couldn't have sorted the arches out while they were on!

As for the coil, after another half an hour spent in the shop we eventually got one, but the problem is still there so we're still wondering as to what it could be.

I've put a bit more detail on the topic under the post 'Ital Carb Setup' :)

What's your ETA on the coupe? I guess now you don't have to rush it once the Ital starts behaving !

The coupe has recently been moved up to my parents place for a few months, with being back at uni now I'm back to being broke! It was going to be on the road this year, but we kept discovering new bits of rot here and there, so hopefully after Christmas sometime I'll need the arches welding etc, and other than that there shouldn't be too much to do, just fitting all the new parts I've bought for brakes etc.

I feel quite bad having to put her to one side for a few months, but she'll get there eventually, think I might ask Santa for a welder and a few lessons! :)

hi ya
if you can get hold of some old drums for the back you can try cutting groves across them i have done this and it makes the back lock up on the hand brake better and more realiable just what you need for special tests
as for a buget
never pay for body work you will just be scared of bashing it
never try to make the engine faster its not needed
buy good tyres
make sure the navigator has a good set up and is comfortable
get good seats harnesses are nice but not necessary
buy a trip meter this is your big spend but so worth it you will have to cut the speedo cabel take your time fitting it make sure the driver and navigator can see it (a brantz 2 is a good one )
and remember a fast car and driver will just get lost quicker help the navigator at all times never shout at each other
thats all you would need for historic road rallying
