Gearbox gearstick housing problem!

Post by MARINAMADBAZ » Thu Mar 29, 2012 11:40 pm

Hi guys
changed the gearbox on my everyday 1700HL MARINA today
had a spare gold seal unit ready to go in out of a donor car.
Anyway got my old gearbox out and had got the replacement in and was about to put my original gearstick in the replacement box and discovered that it wouldn't fit , :? the pin that keeps the ball piece on the stick from spinning around was on the opposite side to my original gearbox, could'nt turn the stick around else the stick would be in the dashboard,so had to find a 1.3 gearstick (slot on the stick ball on the other side)from my stores and the problem was sorted.
just wondered why this 1.7 gearbox had to have 1.3 stick, did they get the gearbox casing mixed up when it was reconditioned by gold seal???
After this minor hiccup i now have a gearbox that dosen't sound like a load of marbels in a metal tin :D
Best regards
Barry

Barry

The design of the gear selector mechanism changed over the years, with changes to the side of the pin, the little spring/button piece and the length and angle of the gear stick.

All the tail shafts are interchangeable, so if push came to shove you could alwAys change them over.

I had 3 different tail castings when I built my box.
All had pins on both sides.

BL did mix and match and just because it is a gold seal may not mean it is great, my old box was a gold seal which came out and had loads of items wrong including no magnet in the bottom so all the crud carried on going round the gears

Hopefully you got a good one

Paul, you're right they all have two pins on the outside. I think Barry was talking about the pin on the inside that matches with the slot in the side of the gears stick ball.

Thanks guys
yes i was talking about the pin on the inside that stops the stick from spinning around the ball piece on the stick has a slot for this.
1.7 and 1.3 sticks have the slot in a different place,
well thats what ive discovered.
Thanks paul i know a GOLD SEAL may not be the best but if you had heard the other box this one is a vast improvement. :D
this box has only gone on my run around and this car isnt one of my best so not to borthered.
i put the other box about five years ago and it had now done a good 100,000 when i took it out so not bad considering that they are weak part of our vehicles. :)
Best regards
Barry
