Wiring problems!

Post by 42Crowman » Mon Jan 11, 2016 12:55 am

Hi, I runa 1984 Morris Ital 440 as everyday work van. Loks a bit rough, but mechanically sound and very solid, hard working example. Noticed brake lights stopped working last week ans now indicators as well. All fuses checked OK. No power to flasher unit plus wire colours don't seem to match wiring diagram I have. Fuse ratings different to book also. Were there changes to wiring diagrame during production? I assume it is one problem causing both effects? Any ideas welcome, can't use it safely like this and wasted 2 hrs today trying to diagnose!!!

Cheers, Rob (42crowman)

Hi Rob,
You say the fuses are ok, did you test them in situ?
If not with ign on, test both sides of the fuses & not just the fuse but the connections the
Fuses fit into with a meter or a test light.
The connections can slacken off with age & might be be bad.
If so its a simple clean up job & gently tighten the fuse clips .
Not saying this is your problem but thats where i'd start...
Gil...

Brake lights could also be blown lamp filaments - or the switch above the brake pedal.

The hazard light switch can interfere with the operation of the indicators. Try flicking it on and off a few times.

I 'lost' the rear lights on my old Pickup after reversing up against a wall (I only kissed it). The next time I drove it, I had an axle rolling and banging about in the back (on Stu's test drive) and then the lights worked again. I surmised it was a poor Earth at one or more of the bulb-holders. If you take the inspection plates off inside the rear of the van you can check whether the power is getting through (eliminating or implicating the switch and fuse), then check the local earths and the bulbs.

Slow Ital's suggestion of the fuse holders is also possible, I had the same problem with the washers being intermittent failures. Closing the fuse clips up overcame this, but be careful as the old fuse clips can be brittle and break off if you get heavy handed.
