Water ingress through air vents under wipers?

Do you have door switches for the interior light? I found in my van one of the rubber blanking plugs that filled the hole where the light switches should be fell out. Water runs down the A pillar and into the hole then onto the floor under the kick panel. I used a small strip of insulation tape across the hole just to check. No more wet carpets.

Worth a try on the passenger side at least Nigel, thank you. I can see the driver's side is tracking down centrally from behind the dash, but the passenger side looks just like you say there.

Does your heater have a leak from the core? Or maybe the heater itself has a leak so the rain water leaks out into your car before reaching the drain on the firewall?

I was thinking about this, and I'm not sure, but I think it stays dry on dry days, which wouldn't make sense if your scenario were right. Is there a way of colouring the water in the heater to be sure?

Still leaking like hell, so I'm at a loss now.

The carpets are out so it can be mopped up, and I'm up to my eyes til after Christmas, so it will have to wait til then.

Any water coming out of your heater will be the same colour as your radiator water, blue, red, rusty or .....?

If the water is clear then will be rain water.

Hi Mik, My Coupe leaks in the same way as yours mate. Like you I've replaced the windscreen seal and tried all manner of things but to no avail. My short (becoming long) term solution has been to place a cup from an old soup flask on sheets of newspaper underneath the clutch pedal where the water drips in. I'm going to wait until next summer before investigating any further as to be able to see where the water is getting in I reckon I'll have to remove the dash. Should be self evident then as there'll be a rust coloured streak to trace it by.

You could try a watering can full of water coloured with blue/red/green food dye. Progressively empty the whole can over the drivers side of the screen and sit back and wait.

Unless the dash is out, that still might not help me much Chris. I can see where its ending up, but maybe the colouyre water will show up just inside the screen rubber, so I'll try it.Thanks.
Theres a drip or two coming from behind the rear view mirror at the headlining and dripping down too.

I know the roof is solid so could this be condensation maybe?

Hi Mik, ...just a thought, i have found in the past that Windscreen specialists tend to seal only the outer flange of the weatherstrip, (ie the part where the rubber meets the metal frame of the screen surround), BUT sometimes the inner channel can leak too, where the glass sits in the rubber, so i would suggest you make sure they seal BOTH to make sure the screen cannot be the culprit

Thanks Frank. I ADORE this car - I want to put the carpets back in ASAP!!! So I will take it back to the Screen place and suggest they do it again, as you have said.

But thats what I told them to do intially.

If you remove the grid covering the air intake and then carefully add water, you can then see if water wells up and over the "dam" where the air actually goes into the heater down below. If you determine the water is not flowing over at that point, the only other possibilities are around the screen washer jets (not very likely!), the wheelboxes (somewhat more likely), or around the windscreen seal. If you get to this last point without finding the leak, look at the top corners of the screen. Just about every car I've seen has a poor fit at this point. Sometimes the seal doesn't even touch the sheet metal. Lift the edge of the seal and see if there are voids underneath. I've had to inject sealer here on many cars. Hope this helps. Skip

I have actually seen water coming in around the seal-to-glass area during heavy rain - looks like there was very little or no sealer used there during initial assembly.
Unfortunately I can't do anything about it until I obtain a new rubber, as this one will definitely not survive the removal process.
Thats the problem with hot summers...

Thanks! Chris Fielding and I were talking via twisted pair a couple of days ago, and he reminded me that I should catch up on my reading. I spent two hours catching up on all the threads today.
I've had a little success with 3M sealer and the applicator that comes with the can. It's pretty much what the glass shops use around here. Cleanup is messy, but worth it.

Leaky screens.....I had a leaky front screen on my '63 Sceptre & I was worried about taking it out as it's a big ol' wrapround glass & I feared breaking it. So went searching for a solution & found "Captain Tolley's Creeping Crack Cure !" (what a great name !) It's a marine application, that is supposed to work it's way into dry rubbers etc etc...& find any gaps & then set hard. It's clear, easy to apply & so far seems to be holding up....although it's not been exposed to any heavy rain. I bought mine through ebay, but it's avail at lots of places & does have it's own website with an interesting demo vid. Even if you buy some & don't use it, any good workshop deserves to have a bottle of it on the shelf just for the fantastic name alone !!
