just painted my mk3

I have spent all day flatting back and masking off etc and have just painted 1 side of the car I used my air fed mask from my compressor and a stand alone apollo spraymate hvlp spray system and apart from a couple of small runs on one or 2 panel edges it looks bloody good when its flatted back and buffed up it should look ok just got the other side to do tomorrow,

Well done Stu, when you flat it back, use 1200 wet/dry, then finish with 1500 superfine, that way it will polish back up easier, you can get a compound called Farecla G3 from your local paint supplier which will make life a lot easier when it comes to polishing it back up. Good luck! Frank.

what's the best way to get the runs out frank, how long should I let the paint harden for before I do anything to it ?? do you put the g3 on and then buff it off ?? I have a polishing machine, which head do I use I have a red a blue and a yellow plus a lambs wool polishing bonnet. it's a shame about the runs as 90 % of the job looks excellent very flat and very even the only other thing i'm worried about is that the new paint looks ultra shiny and I didn't paint all the car as the roof and bonnet were perfect, maybe I will have to do the bonnet as well as i've also done the boot lid and back panel, thanks for the advice frank it is most appreciated I may sound like I know what i'm doing but I am a complete amateur all I know is that 2k is dangerous for your health hence the air fed mask but as I didn't want to spend Ã‚Â£1100 + at a body shop I thought i'd give it a go I have done a couple of similar jobs in the past one being an mgb which turned out ok but I always used to think that the finished job came out of the gun I didn't realise you had to flat it and cut it back all comes with years of experience eh frank thanks again,

here's the other side fortunately you can't see the runs but they'll flat out ok i'm well chuffed with it but it all depends on what it's like when it's unmasked because the bonnet's not been touched or the roof will leave it alone now till next weekend, the wifes not too chuffed though as i've put pageant blue footprints on the kitchen floor never mind no pain no gain, watch this space...... by the way martin you know where I am lol...

Hi Stu, looks pretty good so far mate, to flat the runs out will take a lot of care and patience on your part, you will need a good quality hard rubber block , if they are really bad put a strip of masking tape either side of the run to protect the surrounding paint, then using your block, some 1000 wet/dry paper and some soapy water flat off the high spots of the run, then take off the tape and have a go with some 1200, once it looks level gently finish with 1500 till it`s smooth, be careful not to rub through around the area you are working, its very easy to slip up at this point. Once you have dealt with the runs, go over the whole lot with the 1500 and loads of soapy water, this will make all your shiny 2K dull, but don`t worry , when you buff it up it will shine again, but it should look better against your old paintwork, use a G mop which is a white sponge mop, or you could use a wool mop, BUT BE CAREFUL!, keep it moving and use a trigger bottle with some water with a little washing up liquid in it, to spray on some water to stop things getting too hot!. Be warned if you keep the mop in one spot for too long it will burn through the paint!, stay off the ridges and edges, you can finish those by hand, put a little G3 on a damp cloth & rub till it shines again. Finally give it a good wax to bring up the gloss ...jobs a good -un! As far as time goes before tackling all of this , with 2K you can usually do it next day, but i would leave it for a few days to go off nice and hard.

Hi Stu, how did it go? ..did your patience hold out?. While you were painting your Marina this weekend i was painting a customers black Morris Minor!, nasty little buggers to paint!...loads of curves to get runs on if your`e not careful

, still it came out nice....for a Minor!

well Frank I haven't actually done it yet i've given it a good few days to harden off I will do it over the weekend but i've been checking it during the week and the strange thing is the more it hardens the flatter it seems to get , I unmasked the car yesterday and the match is very good the joins are invisible I got a rubber block like you suggested so fingers crossed it should go ok I would say the paint has sagged slightly rather than run so might not be as bad as first thought i'll keep you posted(just need an n/s.f bumper end cap to complete the job) :P thanks
