Marina Hatchback

Post by locost_bryan » Tue Oct 23, 2012 11:29 pm

Found this interesting photo on Flickr. Haven't seen it on the group before.

Details here.

This is a standard Marina Coupe which has Been modified to become a hatchback, by the addition of a tailgate from a Mark 3 Capri. I forgot to read the leaflet on the car explaining about the modification, but I think it was a professional job, available to order. Both the car and the tailgate appear not to have been hacked about too much in order to fit. An interesting alteration to one of the few nice cars (the other being the TR7) made by British Leyland in the 1970s.

It was a private modification and uses a Metro slam panel and light panels with a modified Capri hatch and upper hinge system and was done during the late 80's early 90's.

The guy is a club member and brings it to the BMC/BL Rally at Peterborough most years. The car itself is very rough although the conversion is very good.

I think the guy who owns it lives somewhere in the Yorks/Lincs area as it turns up at a few shows local to me. You're right Chris it does look rough now, and has done for a few years. I don't want to offend the guy if he's on here but I have wondered how it gets through the MOT.

It is VERY rough, I to would not want to offend the owner at all but I think you would have to be blind not to see the problems.
I have been in one major crash in marina which was solid and I would not like to be in that one if anything went wrong

Needs a bit more than TLC. The chassis is completely shot, no jacking points etc.

As Paul says, it's not just tatty but downright dangerous.

How could it pass an MOT if the chassis is completely shot? :shifty:

Not so much shot, but patch welds everywhere. Doesn't look like very pretty welding either. No front jacking point on one side and only the remains of one on the other side.

It's surprising what can pass an MOT though, especially if the rot is hidden as it was in JWC. But this is clearly on show.

I removed Reynards N/S/F jacking point for its MOT as it was rotten however I did weld up the hole properly and I do intend on buying a new jacking point from the MMOC when I finally rejoin and have some spare cash to spend on Reynard. At the moment money is tight and my life's fcuked up

I'm sure from what I've seen you could make up your own jacking point easily enough 8-)
